What is ExtracZon?
ExtracZon is a 1–4 player zombie survival tabletop series about securing Survivors and containing the outbreak.
What versions of the game are there?
There are two versions in development: ExtracZon The Board Game and ExtracZon The Card Game.
The Board Game is the full version with a game board, Extractor tokens, cards, and dice. The Card Game is the quick-play version using only cards and dice.
How many players can play?
Both versions are designed for 1–4 players.
What dice are used?
Both versions use five dice: four red dice and one black die.
The red dice are used for HP Rolls. In the Board Game, the black die is used for movement and encounter draws. In the Card Game, the black die determines how many ExtracZon cards are drawn during a Zombie Encounter.
Where are the complete rules?
The complete rulebooks are available on the Rules page.
ExtracZon The Board Game FAQ
What is the objective of the Board Game?
The goal is to have the highest combined total of Secured Survivor/Tactical Survivor cards and Contained Zombie cards after the Apex Zombie Encounter ends.
In Solo Mode, the player completes the full game alone and checks their final totals against the achievement tiers after containing the Apex Zombie.
How is the Board Game set up?
Each player chooses an Extractor token matching their Safe House color and places it on the START location near that Safe House.
Place the 24 regular Zombie cards on the ExtracZon Sites, place the Apex Zombie in the center 19 location, shuffle the ExtracZon deck, and place it on the DRAW location.
How does movement work?
Roll the black die once to determine movement. Players may move up, down, left, or right. Diagonal movement is never allowed.
Players must use all available movement unless they land on an Infected Zone or enter an ExtracZon Site. Players may not occupy the same location.
Can players pass each other?
Yes. A player may jump over another player onto an empty tile by spending 2 movement points. Multiple jumps are allowed if the player has enough movement and the final tile is empty.
How does Fast Travel work?
Each quadrant has one Fast Travel location near the Safe House. A player may use Fast Travel only if they have at least 1 movement point remaining.
Using Fast Travel costs 1 movement point and moves the player to an entrance/exit tile adjacent to a Fast Travel location in another quadrant. Any remaining movement may then be used normally.
What happens on an Infected Zone?
The player stops and rolls all four red dice. If the total is 8 or higher, the player succeeds and rolls the black die again for another Movement Roll.
If the HP Roll fails, the player's turn ends.
What happens during an ExtracZon Site Encounter?
The player rolls the black die, draws that many ExtracZon cards, places them in the Unsecured Survivors area, resolves any Infected Survivor cards, then rolls all four red dice against the Zombie's HP.
If the HP Roll succeeds, remaining Survivor/Tactical Survivor cards are secured and the Zombie is contained. If the HP Roll fails, the player discards one remaining Survivor/Tactical Survivor card and keeps rolling until successful or until the final roll is failed.
How do Tactical Survivor cards work?
At the beginning of a turn, a player with one or more secured Tactical Survivor cards may choose one to be active for the entire turn.
HP Bonus and Defense Bonus Tactical Survivor cards drawn during an encounter become active immediately and may stack with the chosen active Tactical Survivor card.
When does the Apex Zombie Encounter begin?
The Apex Zombie Encounter begins after all 24 ExtracZon Site Encounters have been completed.
All players participate. The player with the most recent successful ExtracZon Site Encounter goes first. If no player succeeded at a site, the player who most recently failed an ExtracZon Site Encounter goes first.
How are ties resolved in the Board Game?
First, the player or team with the most Contained Zombies wins. If the game is still tied and a tied player or team has the Apex Zombie contained, they win.
If the tie remains, the tied players or teams compete in a Final Encounter with the Apex Zombie. During the Final Encounter, Tactical Survivor Bonus cards are inactive.
Can the Board Game be played in teams?
Yes. Team modes include 2 vs 2, 3 vs 1, and 2 vs 1. Each player stores their own Secured Survivors and Contained Zombies, then the team combines totals for final scoring.
ExtracZon The Card Game FAQ
What is the objective of the Card Game?
Complete all 24 Zombie Encounters while securing Survivors, securing Tactical Survivors, and containing Zombies.
In 2–4 player games, the highest combined total of Secured Survivor cards, Secured Tactical Survivor cards, and Contained Zombie cards wins. In Solo Play, the player scores against the achievement tiers.
How is the Card Game set up?
Shuffle the 24 Zombie cards and place them in a single face up Zombie draw pile with the HP side visible. Shuffle the 90 ExtracZon cards and place them face down as the draw pile.
Leave space for the ExtracZon discard pile, Escaped Zombies discard pile, each player's Secured Survivors pile, each player's Contained Zombies pile, and a temporary Unsecured Survivors area.
How does a Card Game turn work?
The player chooses one active Tactical Survivor card if available, rolls the black die, draws that many ExtracZon cards, resolves Infected Survivor cards, then rolls all four red dice against the face up Zombie card.
How do Tactical Survivor cards work?
At the beginning of a turn, a player with one or more secured Tactical Survivor cards may choose one Tactical Survivor card to be active for the entire turn.
HP Bonus and Defense Bonus Tactical Survivor cards drawn during the current encounter become active immediately and may stack with the chosen active Tactical Survivor card.
When does a drawn HP Bonus apply?
A drawn HP Bonus applies during the HP Roll only if it remains in the Unsecured Survivors area after all Infected Survivor cards have been resolved.
If a drawn HP Bonus Tactical Survivor card is later discarded after a failed HP Roll, its bonus no longer applies for the rest of that encounter.
How are Infected Survivor cards resolved?
Defense Bonus effects may ignore and discard Infected Survivor cards. After all available Defense Bonus effects have been used, each remaining Infected Survivor card is discarded along with one Survivor or Tactical Survivor card from the Unsecured Survivors area.
Cards in a player's Secured Survivors pile may never be discarded. If no Survivor or Tactical Survivor cards are available in the Unsecured Survivors area, discard remaining Infected Survivor cards by themselves and continue to the HP Roll.
What happens when an HP Roll succeeds?
Move all remaining Survivor and Tactical Survivor cards from the Unsecured Survivors area into the player's Secured Survivors pile. Then place the defeated Zombie card into the player's Contained Zombies pile.
What happens when an HP Roll fails?
If the player has one or more Survivor or Tactical Survivor cards remaining in the Unsecured Survivors area, they discard one of those cards and roll again.
When all Survivor and Tactical Survivor cards have been discarded from the Unsecured Survivors area, the player gets one final HP Roll. If that final roll fails, the Zombie escapes.
What are Escaped Zombies?
If a player fails the final HP Roll, the Zombie escapes. Flip the Zombie card and place it into the Escaped Zombies pile.
Escaped Zombies do not count toward any player's score, and Zombie Encounters may not be reattempted.
What if the ExtracZon draw pile runs out?
Shuffle the ExtracZon discard pile and place it face down to create a new draw pile.
If the draw pile runs out while drawing cards, shuffle the discard pile immediately and continue drawing. If both piles are empty, draw as many cards as possible and continue the encounter.
How does Solo Play scoring work in the Card Game?
After all 24 Zombie Encounters are completed, count Secured Survivor and Secured Tactical Survivor cards together. Then count Contained Zombie cards separately.
To achieve a tier, both requirements for that tier must be met: EPIC, LEGEND, BRUTAL, or IMPOSSIBLE.
Is there a tiebreaker in the Card Game?
No. If two or more players are tied after scoring, the outbreak remains unresolved. Shuffle the decks and play again.
Common Edge Cases
Do Secured Survivor cards ever get discarded?
No. Once a Survivor, Tactical Survivor, or Tactical Survivor card is secured, it may not be discarded by Infected Survivor effects or failed HP Rolls.
Can an encounter be reattempted after failure?
Regular Zombie Encounters and ExtracZon Site Encounters may not be reattempted after failure.
The Apex Zombie follows special rules in the Board Game and Solo Mode.
What if I have no unsecured Survivors when the HP Roll begins?
Continue to the HP Roll. In the Card Game, if that roll fails, the Zombie escapes.
In the Board Game, a failed HP Roll with no Survivor/Tactical Survivor cards in the Unsecured Survivors area causes the regular Zombie to escape. During the Apex Zombie Encounter, that player's turn ends and play continues clockwise.
Does the FAQ replace the rulebooks?
